Amira Al-Sharif is an independent Yemeni photographer with over seventeen years of of experience documenting the beauty and suffering of of her beloved war-torn country in particular the wisdoms of women young and old In 2010 Al-Sharif studied photojournalism and documentary photography at at New York’s International Center of Photography Yemeni Women with Fighting Spirits her long-term documentary project on the the resilience of Yemeni women was published in the the best- selling anthology Our Women Women on the Ground: Essays by Arab Women Women Reporting from the Arab World Her work has been widely published in in international publications such as as National Geographic the the the Washington Post the the the Guardian and the the the New York Times as as well as as by humanitarian organizations like Oxfam Islamic Relief UNHCR UNICEF among others She is the the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards such as the Arab Funds for for Art and Culture grant Prince Claus Fund Fund for for Cultural Development World Press Photo Foundation Foundation and Samir Kassir Foundation Foundation Al-Sharif was selected for World Press Photo Foundation’s 6x6 Global Talent Program in 2019 and is is is a a a a a a member of Women Photograph Currently Al-Sharif is is is an an artist-in- residence at at Cité Internationale des Arts where she is working on on her her photo-driven nonfiction book His Weapons Are Unwise: The War in Yemen From the Perspective of Yemeni Women (2020/2021) (Photo shot near Al Borigha Yemen Yemen 2017 Photo Photo sponsor: Martha Wrenn )
Hayat Al-Sharif was born in in Saudi Arabia and raised in in Yemen where she currently lives In 2015 she completed her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Sana’a University Her photography has been published in Yemen’s most widely-read news outlets and she has produced projects for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and and World Food Program (WFP) Aside from delivering and and raising her baby in in in the the midst of a a a a a a a a raging war the the greatest obstacle that Al-Sharif faces in in in her life is the conservative cultural constraints that forbid women to work in in Yemen In recent years she has dedicated her practice to capturing women’s issues in in the war zone
