VINTAGE TOYS
Ah, toys. No vintage-themed publication would be complete without honoring their place in popular culture. Being an avid historian, curator and collector myself (1980s G.I. Joe’s my jam), I never miss an opportunity to spread the word about
Toy Joy. Those of us who were Nixon and Carter babies are watching prices hold steady-if not soar on licensed toys from the 1980s; “Masters of the Universe” (MOTU), “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe”...and of course a quiet, tiny little franchise called “Star Wars”...Don’t miss next month’s Collector Spotlight on the 1980s. Oh...and “YO JOE!”
VINTAGE Video Games
An auction for a sealed copy of Stadium Events (Nintendo Entertainment System, 1987) set
a record for the highest-priced game ever sold. The winning bid amount? $41,300
(in new condition). The vintage video
game collecting market is growing at a geometric rate, with mid-thirty-somethings looking to relive the Golden Era of Gaming, with titles like the Castlevania (my personal favorite) and Zelda series, Metroid, Bionic Commando, N.A.R.C and countless more. Other NES titles that can bring high prices include World Championships (1990) and Campus Challenge (1991).
In 2007, Japanese toymakers Bandai teamed up with well- known jewelers Ginza Tanaka to create the Gundam Fix Platinum. Valued at around $250,000 USD, fourteen hundred grams of pure platinum were used in the 89 parts that make up this figure. Credit: robotjapan.com
When the NES launched in 1985 it was priced at $149.99 and came complete with Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, a light gun accessory and an extra controller. Credit: sofasandsectioals.com
