When the
record was released in August, the provocative title was shortened
to just Cheap Thrills, and the band’s live billing was
now “JanisJoplinwith Big Brother and the
Holding Company,” which indicated the
shifting status within the band.Joplin’s
stature was outdistancing the rest of the members
and people even began referring to the group as Janis and the band.
Released in October 1968 by Track Records/Polydor, an Reprise Records in North America. The double album was the only record
from the band produced by Jimi Hendrix. By mid-November, it had charted at number one in the United States, where it spent two week
at the top spot. Electric Ladyland was the Experience’s most commercially successful release an their only number one album. It peaked at number six in the UK, where it spent 12 weeks on the chart.
Back in 1968, Doors singer Jim Morrison refused to let the band accept a $75,000 deal to use ‘Light My Fire’ in a car ad. Following his death, the remaining
members of the band became embroiled in a lengthy row when they were
offered $15 million for the same thing. Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger agreed, while drummer John Densmore refused to go against the singer’s wishes.
The Doors produced Feast of Friends and asked their of cial photographer, Paul Ferrara, to direct the experimental documentary. A young Harrison Ford was allegedly among the movie’s camera technicians; the lm would be completed about ve years before Ford’s breakout role in American Graf ti.
Although Ferrara and friends completed a 40-minute cut of Feast of Friends, the documentary was never properly released.
