REEL LIFE | WHERE EAGLES DARE
It’s an inarguable point, as far as that goes; Mr. McQueen is cool. I would submit, though, that there are subcategories of cool. Di erent shades
of cool. Timothy Hutton is cool in “The Falcon and the Snow- man.” Robert De Niro is cool in “Heat”. Jeremy Renner is cool in “28 Weeks Later”.
And then there are actors who smolder. Yes; they smolder. Patrick McGoohan has it, and Richard Burton has it.
He really has it in “Where Eagles Dare”. It’s no small achievement upstaging “The Clint Squint”, but here, amongst the snow- covered Bavarian peaks of The Schloss Adler (“Castle of the Eagle”), The Man with no name doesn’t stand a chance.
Directed by Brian G. Hutton and based o of a screenplay and story by Alistair McLean, the lm was released in the United Kingdom on December 4, 1968. For those not in the know (shame on you), it stars The Sultan of Smolder himself, of course, Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood and Mary Ure.
It also boasts some of the top moviemaking professionals of the time, including Hollywood

stuntman Yakima Canutt, who, as second-unit director, shot most of the action scenes; British stuntman Alf Joint, who doubled for Burton, award- winning conductor and composer Ron Goodwin, who wrote the lm score, and future Oscar-nominee Arthur Ibbetson, the lms cinematographer.
Severely depressed over the steady decline of his career and failing health, Burton was in desperate need of a box o ce hit. He would disappear from the set without warning, for days at a time. Much of this time spent AWOL involved boozing with Peter O’Toole and Richard Harris.
The production encountered further compications due to the severe weather conditions in Austria. The crew had to contend with blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and the constant threat of an avalanche.

Despite this, the lm went on to gross $21,000,000 (USA), from an (estimated) budget of $7,700,000. Dubbed “Where Doubles Dare” by it’s lead actors due to the signi cant amount of screen time given to the stuntmen, it is now widely considered to be one of the nest war movies of all time.
So grab your ice cream, your favorite thick blanket and kill the lights. You’ll be glad you did...after all, it comes with The Goodner Brother’s personal guarantee.
