Letter from Rabbi David Budnik, one of the foremost students of the Alter of Novardok to the philanthropist
and activist Rabbi Chaim Yisrael Eiss of Zurich, regarding assistance for the Novardok yeshivas in Latvia. Dvinsk, 1933.
Speci cations: [1] o cial paper leaf, written on both sides. 21x28 cm. With the handwritten signature of Rabbi David Budnik and the yeshiva׳s secretary and with the yeshiva׳s stamp.
Unique Features: In the letter is a description of the yeshivas for younger students opened in various cities in the Dvinsk region and their di cult economic state.“ ank G-d, a successful and fruitful place was found here to teach Torah to many students ... and its material state is very poor.״ e recipient is later asked to assist “the honor of the Torah and the traditional education ״...!of all of the entire country of Latvia ... provide assistance
Background: Rabbi David Budnik was essentially the primary successor of the Alter of Novardok in teaching the philosophy of Novardok and in establishing many branches of the yeshiva. He was born c. 1893, known as a genius at a young age, and was accepted to the Chofetz Chaim׳s yeshiva in Radin, where he was taught by his uncle Rabbi Moshe Landinsky. He headed the Novardok yeshivas in Mohilev and Zhitomir, and he was the one to re-establish the yeshiva in Novardok after it was destroyed in the First World War. He then established the chain of Novardok yeshivas in Dvinsk and its environs. He was martyred with the yeshiva׳s students in 1941. מכתב מאת הגאון הצדיק רבי דוד בודניק מגדולי תלמידי הסבא מנובהרדוק אל הגביר והעסקן רבי חיים ישראל אייז מציריך, בדבר סיוע לישיבות נובהרדוק בלטביה. דווינסק, תרצ״ד [1933].
מפרט: [1] דף נייר רשמי, כתוב משני צדדיו. 21X28 ס״מ. בחתימת ידו של רבי דוד בונדיק ושל מזכיר הישיבה, עם חותמת הישיבה.
מאפיינים יחודיים: במכתב תיאור על הישיבות הקטנות שנפתחו בערים שונות סביבות דווינסק ומצבם הכלכלי הירוד.״ב״ה הצליחה ועשתה פרי רב כי מצאה כאן כר רחב להרבצת התורה והמידה תלמידים הרבה... אכן מצבה החומרי ברע מאוד״. בהמשך מתבקש הנמען לסייע “לכבוד
התורה וחנוך חרדי של כל מדינת לטבי׳... תנו יד לקומה!...״
רקע: הגאון הצדיק רבי דוד בודניק – היה למעשה ממשיכו העיקרי של רבו הסבא מנובהרדוק בהפצת תורת נובהרדוק ובהקמת סניפים רבים לישיבה. נולד בשנת תרנ״ג בערך, בגיל צעיר נודע לעילוי ונתקבל לישיבת החפץ חיים בראדין שם יצק מים על יד דודו הגאון רבי משה לנדינסקי. עמד בראש ישיבות נובהרדוק במוהילוב, זיטומיר והוא אשר ייסד מחדש את הישיבה בנובהרדוק לאחר שנחרבה בימי מלחמת העולם הראשונה, ולאחר מכן ייסד את רשת ישיבות נובהרדוק בדווינסק וסביבותיה. הוא נספה על קידוש ה׳ עם בני הישיבה, בתמוז תש״א [1941]. הי״ד.
