test as you wish. Nothing will turn me from my love and praise, my adoration and supplication to You. You are the creator of all that is. Ours is not to judge or presume to understand even an iota of Your mystery; ours is to say with open hearts, in full acceptance: ‘Yes, yes, yes!’”
But the other side remained adamant. “No, no, no—this perversion, this sadism, this holocaust is a blight on Your name. No amount of twisted reason can condone it. It is totally beyond acceptance and must be repulsed, refuted, refused, repelled, condemned. It must be defied with every ounce of strength that human decency can muster. This level of evil must be wiped off the face of creation no matter what the effort or consequences; it cannot, must not and will not be accepted. This reality is the devious and nightmarish imaginings of a mind gone mad; it must perish and be no more. God is guilty of being not just imperfect but merciless, cruel and unjust!”
For three days and three nights, charge, countercharge and defense were deliberated, point by point. Finally weary and spent, the jury convened. When the verdict was in, the judge rose to face a courtroom spilling over with grim-faced spectators hushed with expectation. Looking down solemnly over the gathering, he read: “After long deliberation and consideration the jury has found God . . . guilty as charged.” They had actually found God guilty. So deep and impenetrable was their ghastly record of suffering, that this group of learned, wise and well-intentioned people could not accept it, no matter what the circumstances or explanation, no matter what possible hidden inner meaning or reality.
Guilty was the verdict and guilty it would remain. Now, worn from the deliberation, the group sat stunned, without direction. After a long silence the judge again rose to address the court.
“Now let us pray,” he said.
