CHAPTER ONE
PROFESSOR PREBEN Plum is chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University Hospital in Copenhagan, Denmark. A prominent and respected figure in his medical community, he has spent his entire professional career treating and caring for crippled children. He was chairman of the Danish Medical Research Council and influential in the direction medical research has taken in his country. Now, 72, and facing retirement, he was turning his attention to spiritual matters when he read my first book Sai Baba: The Holy Man and the Psychiatrist. He contacted me from Denmark. “I would like to see Sai Baba and wonder if I might join you there one day.”
We met on the ashram grounds one drizzly December day in 1978. Plum was accompanied by his friend Hagen Hasselbach, who had been making Danish professional films for some forty years.
