CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
ANOTHER DAY came and went-and still no interview. Although we were allowed in the house, our brief contacts with Baba weren’t enough to soothe the frayed nerves of my friends. They grew more and more irritable and expounded on the discomfort in their lives in general. I was witness to the outpouring of all their worries, fears, discouragements and hopes. They were being opened by that old Sai Baba technique: waiting in silence for the right moment. When they began talking about leaving I told them, “Please wait just a bit longer; I know you’ll have an interview and then everything will be clearer. Just wait—have patience and wait.” But by this time they had had quite enough of my encouragement and went ahead with their plans anyway. It was then, at the end of the second day, that Baba said he would see them the next morning.
During the two days in Bangalore, we had had some interesting conversations, more so when the heat was on and feelings were stirred. Dr. J. was a homespun, practical fellow. He was athletic in build
