within my profession. I proposed papers about Sai Baba to the 1973, 1974 and 1980 annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association — and was turned down all three times. Colleagues in the community seemed totally disinterested.
To me this represented understandable but professionally untenable resistance to material which was of profound importance. I decided to look at this problem in more detail by arranging an interview with a respected San Diego psychoanalyst whom I felt represented the mainstream of psychiatric thinking. He was sensitive, bright, experienced as both teacher and administrator, with a broad range of interests, including psychosomatic and hospital psychiatry. I hoped to define and examine resistances that he might hold to this material. After the interview he asked to remain anonymous.
