82 SPIRIT AND THE MIND
FAITH
Faith in this love, faith in divinity, proves an awesome stumbling block for many scientists. So it is extremely fortunate if one has direct experience of this love, for like nothing else, it convinces and deepens one’s faith in its reality. Sai Baba may have his greatest impact here, for I am convinced that he is the most compelling evidence of Universal Consciousness seen since the time of Christ. Sai Baba’s Universal Consciousness, compassion and love are experienced so clearly, dramatically, convincingly and poignantly that he can awaken another’s love instantly and turn one to a life of devotion.
DEVOTION
Once one recognizes the truth that duality can be transcended through devotion and love, then one realizes how important it is that knowledge about the devotional path be taught. Devotion is an essential element in the cultivation of selfless love. It awakens the deepest spiritual centers, allowing a much deeper vision into reality than the mind can afford (and I use this word in both its meanings). Through devotion the world is seen as a holy expression of divine grandeur: everything is perceived as God’s will. This vision of God’s omnipresence and of His manifestation as all of creation, brings with it the perception of unity in diversity, a deeper vision of the oneness of all creation.
There are definite and practical steps to take in the cultivation of devotion. Prepare a devotional area in your home and in your heart, and keep it sacred and clean. There, in reverence and respect, begin your devotional relationship with God—in whatever name and form with which you feel most familiar and comfortable—through the quiet and stillness of silent sitting. Rise and go to bed with His name on your lips, and repeat His name as often as you can during the day. Read the scriptures—of any religion—daily and look for their meaning in the fabric of your daily life. Seek the company of the pious and of serious spiritual aspirants, and spend time in study and worshipful devotion with them.
