Developing Leadership Qualities
I asked a group of talented members from our San Diego Center to meet regularly to look at the issue of what it takes to be good dharmic members of a community. We inquired into what it meant to be a Sai leader. What are Swami’s teachings about leadership, and what qualities are needed to be a leader in his organization? We called our group the “Small Group” because we only had seven members.
General Chibber, a respected, retired Indian general and ardent devotee of Swami, wrote a book on Sai leadership.2 Swami complimented this book, so we consulted it for direction. In it, General Chibber presented a diagram that showed the elements of a good leader, at the center of which was the vision that ignited the leader. General Chibber once told me that the greatest leaders had the most expanded vision and that their leadership capacity was proportionate to their selflessness. They were motivated out of love for all. Leaders who had the greatest capacity to lead, like Jesus and Buddha, were selfless
