Baba held up the beads and said, “Each one has nine facets, very special,” and he gently placed the japamala over my head. There was much more given than a material object in this wonderful giing. Sai Baba’s love was so all-consuming and transforming when directed specifically toward me. My heart burst with love for him. Finally, I knew that he loved me.
Finding Divine Love
Aer the japamala trip, there was greater harmony in our home. Although Sam had never forced his beliefs upon me, confusion and doubts had kept me bound. Suddenly, I was unfeered and free! I had been given the gi of faith.
I began to experience Sai Baba as divinity. His glory and authority awed me. Paying closer aention to his teachings about the unity of all faiths under one God, I realized that love for Sai Baba did not conflict with my Jewish faith. Isn’t Judaism based upon ethical living and love for God? In fact, aren’t all religions built upon the same principles of love and morality? I developed a new appreciation for other religions and a feeling of kinship with them. Energized and inspired, my love for Sai Baba began to spill over into every aspect of my life.
Sai Baba says that he is a mirror, and that he reflects back our own selves in the mirror. Like a master therapist, he gives us glimpses of hidden feelings and undesirable character traits. Gently and lovingly, he assures us that he can help us change. It became clear that my previous resistance was due to my own confusion and negativity and not to Sai Baba. He was helping me look more deeply into myself to find divine love.
Although we started the Sai Center in our home in 1973, I oen declined to join the center activities. I was quick to pass judgment and wondered how people could claim to be devotees when their conduct was far from godly. Gradually I realized that the others whom I saw were only reflections of me! I stopped criticizing the shortcomings of others and concentrated on my own transformation. I began to understand
