" Our driving force comes from a unique mix of influences; music & creativity, inspiring technologies and the exciting challenge of pushing forward into the unknown. "
times finally came and I was lucky mine was right on that 12.30/1 am mark when of course the club is in full swing.
I was absolutely bricking my pants! Back then it was a lot of competition - you know, almost like a boxing match where you really slag each other off before the fight and shake hands like gents after. It’s just the way it was. Boys will be boys.
During my set I started off ok got that first mix in which was important to me and cruising along just fine until one the other DJ’s pals decided to jump up on stage and bash the deck table right in the mix. The records started to skip and train track, to which I immediately did a spin back double scratch and dropped it right back on the beat. Well that was it, the whole club erupted, the mc went nuts and I saw red - the guy had gone too far and I played one the best sets I have ever played in anger because I thought I had already lost.
I can tell you in a million years Paul I would never be able to pull that move off again. I can only thank one my best pals for that AD_J for the pint of vodka & orange to calm me nerves before hand, ha ha he turned me into a fucking monster!!
Obviously, I thought I had lost was down in the dumps with a face on because I hate making a mistake. I am my own worst enemy in that respect, and yea the MC called out my name. I’d won! The club went absolutely mental as they witnessed me recover from a horrible incident, I went outside called my mum on the phone and cried like a bitch ha ha .
Tell us about BubbleJam what’s the plan for the brand?
Our driving force comes from a unique mix of influences; music & creativity, inspiring technologies and the exciting challenge of pushing forward into the unknown.
In this continuing search it’s always been important for me to trust my instincts and have the freedom to follow any of the pathways that unfold before me, no matter how unexpected they seem.
As my main project, Bubblejam was founded
to bring a new type of clubbing experience to Liverpool & Wales; an eclectic mix of music programming, creative production techniques and cohesive design aesthetics.
It is my belief that by combining these elements, a deeply immersive experience can be created. I aim to deliver a brand of high quality entertainment.
You have been producing for a while; tell us about your style, and whats in your future plans?
Well I’ve come down a few notches from my old stuff where I was up in the 140 bpm category for the harder stuff,.Most of my techno now is around 128 bpm to 133 bpm with my tech house and deep techno down in the 123bpm to 126 bpm. I am happy with it right now and it seems to be working for me. I love tribal sounds, most probably with my grounding in the free party scene; I am always looking for something different, trying to think outside of the box if you like.
In my day job I work offshore on wind turbines. You never see me without a sampler app on my phone always looking for strange sounds and also natural sounds.
My focus this year will be to get Bubblejam up and running, I don’t want just one thing on here like an expected format , I want Bubblejam to be unexpected. I want everything from deep techno, tribal house and techno to appear here, it has to ebb and flow otherwise you get bored easy and that’s not good - always expect the unexpected .
I will also be teaming up with my long time friends and legends this year for various projects. I expect to be over in Germany soon with Andreas Kraemer at Construct Rhythm studio and also Glenn Wilson, a close friend of mine at the rhythm labs. We shall be up to no good no doubt later in the year I expect .
What’s your goal in 2016 and beyond?
My goal is to get the label and event up and running and established with a good following in Liverpool, further more expand my DJ appearances further afield. It’s hard these days
without the right agency (something I may need to find at some point), the work load is just too much to control on your own.
I have already been working hard behind the scenes on my own tracks, which I am looking forward to releasing this year. Nothing beats watching the reaction from the crowd with a track you personally made. I don’t believe in all this false profiteering see, you will never see me with a ghost written track. It’s something I feel strongly and passionate about, which is the music I play, not for the royalty it seems to bring for untalented ego`s, V.I.P culture and 50 person entourage in a DJ booth these days. Go to college, knuckle down, learn yourself if you want my respect. Some DJ’s these days just think money will buy them anything but know this, it doesn’t buy talent, that I can promise you. Weekend millionaires, the worst of them all. I was shocked only this year a headliner was on after me at Eden in Ibiza after the sets we had a chat in the green room like you do and after telling me some huge labels that were signing his tracks I casually asked him hey I produce what software or Daw do you use? Only for his reply: ‘ oh I have an engineer back home dude. I pay, he makes. We have an agreement .’ Wow, that horrified me and instant respect was lost from that point .
I would never use such tactics to achieve my goals, I think honesty is always the best policy and will just carry on doing my thing I see where fate takes me.
What are your top 5 all time tracks?
Wow ok, this is hard Paul! I have so many so I suppose I will pull out a few of the old tracks that mean a lot to me from back when I was kid, and sure number one will be the first record I bought so here goes.
1. Quench – Dreams
2. Jam & Spoon The Age Of Love
3. Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness 4. Beltram – Energy Flash
5. Drax - Anphetimene
