Vol 4. execute them for crimes of success
Before I get started on this month’s topic Id like to say a big thanks to everyone who’s been reading my page and the comments I’ve received. I’ve had some great feedback and some objective, which is what this page is all about.
This month I want to talk about this horrible but unfortunate infectious disease that seems to spread through the dance community. It’s something that breeds through social media and those brave keyboard warriors who use their opinions and negativity to try direct the thoughts of others.
I’m taking about the backlash and attempt to try publically humiliate figures in the dance music industry. There’s a common pattern to this and the targets in question are usually someone of success, potentially more on the commercial side of dance music, supported and loved by youth culture. David Guetta is one of the biggest targets because apparently he’s single handedly destroying dance music because his music appeals to millions of young people, he’s popular enough to have his music on the radio, and he’s smart enough to build himself in to a notable brand.
If you look at David Guetta attributes and achievements shouldn’t this prompt thoughts of wow well done, the guys worked very hard and give him a level of respect?
I mean let’s take away any silly myths here success doesn’t fall out the sky as a treat from god. You have to work at it, continue to work at it and the music industry in particular is extremely hard to break.
I understand that David Guetta sound is not for everyone including myself but this isn’t about underground vs overground is it? It’s about publically trying to ridicule individuals who go about their own businesses at no expense or harm to others. This is nothing new either, in the early 90’s Pete Tong used to be a target for many and it was a similar story and similar excuses used for it. Comments like “well they don’t provide anything educational” Well do we really go to clubs for a tutorial and education or rather for a buzz and activity?
If this is all about underground vs overground and taste then why does it
require personal ridicule? I mean you wouldn’t start a public rant because someone liked apples you didn’t would you? “Hey all the apple eating cunts are killing the food industry”... Oranges is where its and they should be shot”?
How about questioning why certain styles of dance music are so popular and what it offers to that makes it so popular. After all nobody is forcing people to listen to it, support and love it. So if it really about underground vs overground well isn’t it time for the underground to challenge? Because moaning and being negativity never fixed anything.
Are we all too influenced and conditioned by the media with the old “build them up to knock them down” attitude designed to help sell newspapers?
Do we follow the likes of pop stars and some DJs who will publicly throw negative insults out at others to create their own attention & publicity?
The famous “Noel Gallagher” for example has been a master of this for years. Often dubbed as being stupid and too flippant with his comments. Well don’t be fooled so easily he’s a very clever man and often what he says generates headlines lines and controversy that you read.
I’ve mentioned “DJ Sneak & Deadmau5” in previous spits and spats who try to copy cat “Noel Gallagher’s” tongue and cheek media tact but its less effective, none humorous, see through and quite pathetic.
Regarding the media influence, well here’s a thought. In the modern world with access to the likes of “Facebook & Twitter” etc are we not all part of the media ourselves?
Ok what we write and broadcast using these methods might not be the same as writing for “News Of The World” but you are affectively broadcasting and publicizing the same and you would be surprised how many people see what you choose to write.
Maybe this in itself is why so many choose to ridicule and make a mockery of the successful for their own mini power trip to cause a response?
It’s fair to say that this disease is not unique to dance music. Only a few weeks
back the football star “Ronaldo” was interviewed on UK TV presenters “Jonathan Ross show”. I saw the interview I thought he was quite polite, none offensive and showed personal gratitude. He was very confident about his talent and desire to be the best possible. He was also tongue and cheek about some areas of his life and successes.
5 minutes after his interview had been aired I saw posts through social media with comments like” What do you think of “Ronaldo” I think he’s up himself and an arse”?
He’s arrogant, he’s this, he’s that etc. And people feed up on this stuff like hungry wolfs.
Why when somebody is confident about what they do and say it with conviction why is it classed as arrogance?
Everybody has goals and desires that they want to achieve and they have to believe and live it to degree to achieve it. Some people and particularly a lot of dance music artists will hide what their true ambitions and goals in fear of being slated by opinion.
So why knock the confident who don’t hide it when they are the ones being straight up and direct with you?
I read an article not so long ago talking about what mentally strong don’t do. Here’s a note from the article and its very fitting.
The mentally Strong: They Don’t Resent Other People’s Success. Mentally strong people can appreciate and celebrate other people’s success in life. They don’t grow jealous or feel cheated when others surpass them. Instead, they recognize that success comes with hard work, and they are willing to work hard for their own chance at success.
Wouldn’t it be great if more of us could take an influence from that article and take up the challenge in a positive manner?
If you believe things can be done better or change well you its up to you to make it happen.
