t only took a matter of weeks since the launch of the opening 'Issue' for London's Printworks to cement itself as one of the leading venues in the UK, with many friends and music industry peers travelling far and wide to check the venue out!
Boasting a 6,000 capacity across all floors and rooms, the remarkable space has hosted nights from Maya Jane Coles, UKF, Junction 2, Nina Kraviz Galaxiid and many more over the twelve weeks it has been open from February until last week, the closing party in April!
Ben Klock's phenomenal label Klockworks were the hosts of the closing party of the first Issue, launching the new concept 'Photon', which gives some of Ben's favourite producers and DJs the chance to shine. Guests of honour at this one were fellow Beghain resident Marcel Dettmann, Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault System guise, Multi deck wizard and techno legend Ben Sims and Klockworks very own Etapp Kyle.
Unfortunately quite late in the day, news reached us that man of the moment and absolute hero Dax J was unable to make his set. However a silver lining emerged as this led to extended appearances from those acts already playing!
Germany's very own Etapp Kyle kicked things off at noon, progressing through a wonderful selection of dark and mysterious grooves, starting with some broken beat before building frenetically which started the day nicely. He certainly took no prisoners as heavy kicks pounded their way through the crystal clear soundsystem at the venue!
Planetary Assault System's live PA was up next, where Luke energetically stepped things up a level with his own productions like 'Arc' that was on his Mote -Evolver label and 1998's 'The Drone Sector' that was on Peacefrog, it's fair to say that in no time at all the place was rocking, following on greatly from Etapp's set.
Ben Sims is a huge favourite of mine and has been since I first got into techno nearly two decades ago, and it's fair to say he destroyed the place playing the set of the evening for me, flawlessly mixing to perfection with some choice acapellas thrown in for good measure. Dropping choice cuts like the new Jeroen Search on Dynamic Reflection, TWR72's fantastic remix recently that came out on Italy's Etruria Beat and even funking things up dropping Robert Hood's mix of Carl Taylor that tore the roof off. This was definitely a set not to be missed.
Marcel Dettmann continued on after Ben's set, taking things on a bit more of an experimental journey that worked wonders for me. I was loving what I heard but where as normally I am clued up on most things techno, the only track I recognised was 'Switch' by S-File on GND.
Finally the night ended with a mammoth two and half hour set from Ben himself, opening with Trevino's awesome Sombre Tones and playing huge numbers from Leandro Gamez, Space DJz, Woody McBride, Arnaud Le Texier, Jeroen Search and 0 [Phase] to name but a few. Ben managed to build the set very well before dropping yesteyear's 'Hale Bopp' by Der Dritte Raum to a mammoth applause and ending on 'How I Feel' by Vinz.
The good news is if you missed this set, or Ben Sims or Planetary Assault systems that they were all broadcast on Be- AT.TV.
Sadly I wasn't hardcore enough to handle the after party, but I will certainly be returning to Printworks for Season two later in the year, for a closing party this was exceptional and I just know it will exceed all expectations the second time around!
