Who is JayoC? Tell us about your youth, and how you got involved in music?
Jason Carroll is my name. I grew up back in 80's, Living in a small council estate in Rathangan in Kildare, Ireland. I was fascinated by music growing up as child. Those long hot summer days gone by where magical to me. Listening to the radio and the TV. MTV USA back then was amazing, something about the 80's music feel good factor. Not having a care in the world. A lot of people know me today as JayoC and overseas to. It was the mid 90's when I got involved in music, back then it was all vinyl. The music scene was only starting for me. It wasn't about making money back then not like today. Being a DJ today is not like when I started out having a passion for it. Key with me is learning new skills all time. Being in tune and having a good ear as well for me . Once you have mastered it there is no looking back. Practice Practice.
Vinyl, Digital or CD’s and why?
I love using Vinyl at home due to clubs don't have them anymore. I have been using digital for short while. There's so much more involved. To much effects which I rather not use. Rather the old skool ways of making my effects. Trust me on that it works if you know how to drop in and drop out while mixing. CD’s, not a fan of one bit due to they damaged too quickly and you don't need that while doing a set. Repeat, repeat and skip, skip a big no no.
Favourite club to play? why?
My favourite club to play. Would be the Ministry of Sound London and the Boiler room in London as well. The reason why; I love to play over there because the people are passionate and like hearing new Irish DJ's with a unique style of mixing free style no pre recorded sets are done with me.
Short or long sets? why?
Personally as a DJ I prefer short sets due to three hour sets can be very exgusteding hard to stay focused. But I don't mind well used it by now staying in the zone is key too.
Your favourite dj/producer, and why?
Carl Cox has to be my favourite producer he tells it as it is. He is a legend, and a icon for the scene.
Your stranded on a desert island for the rest
of your life, what 5 tracks do you have with
you? __________________________________________________________________________________
Delirium - Slience
Robert Miles - Children
Snap!- Rhythm is a Dance
Paul van Dyk - For An Angel Southside Spinners - Luvstruck And one for good measure! Chicane - Saltwater
What do you think of the scene today? Why?
I find today the scene is gone way to commercial, which is not helping the up and coming DJ's who have a true passion.
Give them a chance and a start.
What do you think of playing for FREE gigs?
I don't mind playing at free gigs. Only problem with doing them is certain prompter's tend to pocket the money on the night. For themselves seeing a lot of it going on. Instead of sorting the DJ out, if they can!
Thoughts on the passing of Avici?
It was so sad to hear the sudden passing of Avici don't know what to say. The pressure of being a famous DJ or anyone famous for that mater is though. Being in the spot light to much is not good. Being able to talk to family and friends about any problems going on is key. Self care, and headspace is very much needed.
Does it matter about genre, or do you just play what sounds good?
To some DJ's its all genre but not with me. I love the UK Tech House Underground style of the sounds. I am always up for the challenge as DJ, I love trying out new sounds from aboard and seeing if they work while mixing. So whatever goes, if it sounds good!
Festivals, or small clubs? why?
I dont like festivals, I much prefer clubs, for the intimateacy, the technology and in Ireland festivals can be hit and miss with the weather!
