After that listening to a lot of new EDM in the charts and remixes of singer, songwriter songs I decided to have a session singer sing one of my songs for fun called "Sunshine", which she did amazingly. Then I swapped out the guitar for piano added some beats and made a EDM composition around it. It turned out better than I could of imagined and people really liked it. At this point I already had a good few decent songs written so I decided to marry my songwriting with EDM production and start producing and releasing my music as EDM.
Have you got lots of toys in your studio?
I have this Olympus LS-100 Multi-Track Linear PCM recorder which can edit and play back up to 8 tracks at a time separately and lots of other great features so its great for recording live sound. It's a studio in your hand basically. Then of course I have a Mac with logic, FL, Ableton & plugins massive & sylenth . Also, I would go to a electronic music studio called Movin Music Academy, where I can do either DJ'ing or production, they have everything there with the only limits being your imagination.
Favourite toy in the studio?
Well at home I have this Spanish guitar I got at a market in Barcelona, which sounds amazing, and I use it to write all my songs. It turns out it
was hand made in Mexico and is worth 20 times over what I got it for.
Have you done much DJ work?
I have always been focused on production but from releasing a few singles and sharing them through social media I’ve been asked to DJ in a few clubs so I’ve been taking a DJ workshop and learning on the CDJ-2000's there and preparing with rekordbox. So hopefully in the near future I'll have the opportunity to play some gigs with my set.
Top 5 tracks?
Reflect - Need To Feel Loved Daft Punk - Robot Rock Tiesto - Elements of Life Paul van Dyk - For An Angel Faithless - Insomnia
Favourite track you have produced and why?
"Sunshine" because it was the first of my acoustic songs I decided to make into an EDM track. The whole process from first writing a song on paper and then watching it come to life from the ground up into an EDM track is super exciting.
Any advise for expiring producers?
Have a clear idea of exactly what you want to
achieve. Find what way works best for you to produce and get into a good production routine. Be obsessed be passionate for what you are producing. Follow through with each project to the end and find motivated like minded people to learn and produce with.
Future plans?
Well, from recently releasing my 9 track album Sunshine, I would like to do a few warm up gigs playing my own set and then keep writing producing and putting out new music. Then hopefully one day be playing my music in front of thousands of a people at a big festival that would be the big goal.
My Album Sunshine, which is out now is available on all platforms; Spotify, Youtube, Beatport, iTunes etc. You can search my Facebook Page Kathel for all the latest and new music.
