In your opinion, what are the top 5 vinyl tracks of your career and why?
There is absolutely no way I could condense tracks that have stood out in my career so far into just 5. So here are, in no particular order, 5 tracks on vinyl that I feel could be called 'era defining’:
Tic Tac Toe / Diesel Litre (White Label) an absolute monster of a hardcore track circa '91 / '93 pushed heavily by Fabio, Grooverider, Micky Finn etc. This track would easily make my top 10 of all time and I still adore listening to it to this very day more than 20 years later.
Airborne / Mirage [Eye Q Recordings] a monster trance track from the mighty Eye Q label from Germany. I first heard Dilly playing this track in the Asylum and i'll never forget the way it sounded on the dancefloor. The beat almost seemed like it was in 3D. An absolute beast of a tune.
Jam & Spoon – Follow Me (into this tripamatic fairytale) once again I first heard this tune being dropped by Dilly in the Asylum. Everything about this tune just blew my mind, an absolute masterpiece of music from the legend of trance Jam & Spoon.
DJ Pressure – Pride [Abbey Dance] I think this tune had a massive influence on my career as it took my music to a whole new audience by making it all the way to the top 10 of the Irish charts and staying there for over 20 weeks. This took my name nationwide and I got a lot more exposure from it.
Greg D & Phi Phi – L'Odyssey of Love [Bonzai] this was an absolute monster of a track for me for about the last two years of
the Ormonde MMC. I had actually played it a few times around the Country prior to playing it at the famous last night of the Ormonde when it totally tore the roof off the venue and was without doubt the biggest tune of the night.
What happens on tour normally stays on tour, but do you have any horror stories from behind the decks??
After DJ-ing for 25 years I could write a book on horror stories from behind the decks. I remember playing in the Asylum one night and allowing a young MC – Mike Moggi Mannix a shot on the mic. Everything was going fine and I was in full flow with Mike Moggi Mannix to my left MC-ing and dancing in the DJ box when suddenly the music stopped and I looked in horror to my left to see that said MC had in his moment of excitement on the mic hit the stop button on the technics 1210. I didn't even have to say anything the look of horror on his face was enough. He knew exactly what he had just done!! And as for the rest of the horror stories that happened on tour stay on tour.
After nearly 3 decades DJing what drives you to continue?
Well in 4 simple words 'my passion for music'. I've always had an unquenchable passion for music since I was 10 years old andIknowIwilltothedayIdie. Forme nothing beats the feeling of discovering and playing new music that does it for me and the excitement of playing my new discoveries to a live audience to discover their reaction is the best feeling in the world.
What are your next big planned events and projects?
I'm juggling a lot of projects at the moment between DJ-ing around the country, promoting a series of forthcoming Psyclone Zone events for 2015 and beyond, guesting at various venues in Dublin and around the Country, continuing my 5 year 2fm monthly Sessions residency on Mr. Spring's weekend Sessions show and hopefully if I can find the time to get back into the studio with Mr. Spring. Here's some of my forthcoming dates:
Saturday 25th April 2015 Psyclone Zone @ Tivoli Theatre with Altern-8, Utah Saints, Robbie Nelson, Mark Archer and DJ Dilly.
Saturday 22nd June 2015 Asylum reunion with Art of Trance, Blue Amazon, DJ Dilly, Warren K, Ed-Case @ The Voodoo Lounge.
Sunday 3rd May 2015 @ Nexus nightclub Carlow town.
Saturday August 29th 2015 The Energy Collective presents Old Skool Flavours Vol 1 exclusive DJ Pressure hardcore / rave / breaks / breakbeats old oldskool set @ undisclosed Dublin venue. Watch press flyers for further info.
And watch out for 3 more major Psyclone Zone events planned for 2015 of which I am not at liberty at the moment to divulge the line-ups.
