Dear Zone Readers
I hope everyone reading this is in good health in body, mind and spirit. I have a special treat for all reader in this issue! One thing we all need in this business of music is the gift and discipline of endurance to get through the many “yes” an” no” replies to our work. I have just begun a new record label called NuSoul and my first artist is not only a great vocalist/writer/dj and percussionist but has much wisdom.
May I introduce you to Coco Street !
Five Things You Must Do to Persevere in the Electronic Music Industry. By Coco Street
So you got some killer tracks that have generated critical acclaim and now you have a buttload of new ones dropping on the label of your dreams. As a result, you’ve been invited to perform at the top live streaming events, and you have a promising gig schedule for next year. Congratulations! Well done, you! For some of you, your blast into orbit may have taken a short time. But for many others the spaceship to the stars remains tethered to the launchpad: Fueled up? Check. Engine rumbling? Check. Gone through all the test and drills? Check. Told everybody about the goal? Check. And now, the countdown... TEN! NI...
You’re still in the capsule ready to rock. Engine rumbling, running the drills and sharpening your space flight skills... but then you realize the countdown has stalled.
Soooo... what do you do when you find yourself stuck at the launchpad of your musical dreams? Here are 5 things you MUST DO to keep your dream alive.
1. ADOPT A LIFESTYLE OF FAITH
Whether you’re a DJ, a vocalist a producer or some combination thereof, if you have a dream to succeed without a plan, or if you have a plan but don’t do anything to execute the plan, that is not faith. Faith is action even when the countdown is still stuck at nine-and-a half.
2. HAVE HOPE (AKA NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP)
While waiting on the launchpad, your friends and family might think you’re crazy and they may say things like, “Why don’t you go back to school so you can get a good job?” That’s not a bad idea, as long as you keep your eye on the prize and stay ready in the spaceship. You may be delayed, but you won’t be denied! This has to be something you’re ready to stick with for the rest of your life, which brings me to the next idea.
3. STAY IN LOVE
To position yourself for success in the Dance Music Industry, you must stay in love with everything about this field as whole: good and bad, right and wrong, because then you will have more opportunity to be balanced and healthy in spirit, soul, and body.
4. KEEP A BALANCED AND FOCUSED ATTITUDE
There are too many stories of artists who wobble of their career trajectories because of an imbalanced attitude and it shows up in some crazy ways like drug and alcohol abuse; and for some, can trigger serious mental health challenges. The topic is so serious it has generated front-of-mind panel discussions at festivals like ADE. If you find yourself feeling depressed, anxious, or suicidal, get yourself some good assistance. Here is a place to start: http://www.suicide.org/international-suicide-hotlines.html
5. INVEST IN YOURSELF
In our ever-changing world, you must remain ready to launch! For example: If you are a producer and you have the opportunity to make more tunes for the label of your dreams but you can’t get your vocalist to a studio, why not invest in the equipment and training to produce sparkling vocals! Keep honing your craft!
Well, there you have it. Five things you must do to persevere in the electronic music industry. There are many more things you can do out there that can help keep your spaceship launch ready, so get going! Challenge yourself! What ideas can you come up with?
