The chart at the right shows the total employment count as a percentage of the population aged 16 to 64.
Unlike the previous percentage of the total population chart, the proportion of people in the most predominate working years of life appears to be nearing the peak last seen in 2000.
Notice the service sector is both the largest and fastest growing sector of the economy, fueling the job growth for decades and most recently, after The Great Recession.
The proportion of the working aged population working in local, state or federal government jobs equalled those employed in the goods producing sector by 2003. By 2009, there were more people employed
in government jobs than in the goods producing sector.
While growth in government jobs is  at
and goods producing is rising, the goods producting sector has not yet exceeded government employment counts. Expanded use of production automation and international competition are adversely affecting growth in this sector.
