Qui Tam False Claims & Whistle Blower Actions
Sheppard Mullin has put together an impressive and unparalleled string of victories over the past number of years in representing defendants in qui tam False Claim Act (“FCA”) civil litigation matters pending in federal district court. The firm’s most publicized victory came on May 16, 1996 when a ten member jury in Los Angeles returned a defense verdict completely vindicating Northrop Grumman Corporation involving a nine year battle with the Department of Justice over civil FCA allegations involving the Peacekeeper (“MX”) missile program. This marked the second time Sheppard Mullin had defeated the Department of Justice in a civil FCA action in a 15 month period.
Sheppard Mullin began acquiring an expertise in the federal FCA area in the Fall of 1986, when the statute was substantially amended to make it easier for whistle blowers and the Government to prevail in these types of actions. Since then, the firm has successfully handled numerous qui tam whistle blowing lawsuits. Sheppard Mullin has also acted as co-counsel or provided expert advice on numerous other qui tam actions.
