   Polar Covalent Bond
POLAR COVALENT BOND: Two different nonmetals bond and share the electrons unevenly.
1. Since one element has a stronger electronegativity than the other, it pulls the weaker element’s electrons closer to itself.
Š The “stronger” element appears negative (because it looks like it “stole”
electrons).
Š The “weaker” element appears positive (because it looks like “gave away”
electrons).
2. The difference of the electronegativity of the two elements is less than 1.7 (but
more than zero).
3. The bond is called polar because it has two opposite poles (positive and negative).
4. The greater the difference of electronegativities, the greater the polarity.
