Naming/Reading Compounds
1. Binary Compounds:
a. Write the metal first, then the nonmetal. b. Write out the name of the symbol. Find the
elements’ names on Reffy, Table S (pp. 10-11). c. Make the second element end in ide.
2. Polyatomic Compounds: Just check the name on Reffy, Table E. The name of the polyatomic ion
never gets changed.
NH4+ is ammonium. We do not add “ide.”
a. If you are given ‘Cl’ and ‘Na’, write NaCl.
b. The elements are sodium and chlorine.
c. Change the ending of the second element to get Sodium chloride.
3. Compounds with multiple oxidation states: See ”Reading Compounds with Multiple Oxidation States” card.
