3. SINGLE REPLACEMENT: A free element (element not combined with another element) replaces an element that’s part of a compound.
Fe + CuSO4 FeSO4 + Cu Fe replaced Cu in the compound.
Single replacement−Fe was a “single” (unmarried) element.
In an equation like this, a metal always replaces a metal. A nonmetal always replaces a nonmetal. 4. DOUBLE REPLACEMENT: Two elements replace each other in a compound. They switch partners.
Example: NaCl + AgNO3 AgCl +NaNO3
Ag replaced Na and Na replaced Ag
A metal replaces a metal. A nonmetal replaces a nonmetal. There are many Regents questions on this topic.
