Titration
TITRATION: Slow addition of one solution of a known concentrate to another solution of an unknown concentrate until neutralization occurs.
• We slowly add a solution of known concentration (known molarity) to a solution of unknown concentration until the solution becomes neutral.
• ENDPOINT OF TITRATION: Point of neutralization. How do you know when it reached the neutralization? You will see
a color change in the presence of an indicator. The color of the indicator won’t be the acid color or the base color.
The acid-base indicator phenolphthalein is colorless in an acid and pink in a base. If we have phenolphthalein in a beaker of acid, it will be colorless. In the process of titration, we will add the base until the solution changes colors and becomes neutral. But if we add too much base, the solution will turn basic (not neutral) and the phenolphthalein will turn pink.
Titration neutralizes
concentrations.
