The Three Rules of Table M
• The first pH number in the middle column corresponds to the first color in the rightmost column.
Methyl orange indicator will turn red in a solution with a pH of 3.1.
Any solution with a pH number lower than the first number will also be the first color listed in the rightmost column.
Methyl orange indicator will turn red in any solution with a pH lower than 3.1.
• The second number in the middle column corresponds to the second color in the rightmost column.
Methyl orange indicator will turn yellow in a solution with a pH of 4.4.
Any pH number higher than the second number will turn the second color listed in the rightmost column. Methyl orange indicator will turn yellow in any solution with a pH higher than 4.4.
• Any solution with a pH number that falls in the range listed in the middle column will make the indicator change colors. The color will be between the two colors given in the rightmost column.
Methyl orange indicator will be reddish yellowish in a solution with a pH of 3.5.
