 Kaindy
LLake Kaindy is located in the south of Kazakhstan, with Kolsay Lakes National Park, 130 kilometres east of Almaty, 2000 metres above sea level,
the turquoius lake was formed after a major limestone landslide was triggered by the 1911 Kebin earthquake, Forming a natural dam, the limestone sealed the gorge which then filled up with mountain water from the Kaindy river, flowing into the lake through a two-sided rock face.
Extraordinarily, the lake still contains the trunks of submerged Picea schrenkiana trees that rise above the surface of the lake in ghostly columns. Known to the locals as the ‘sunken forest’, the cold mountain water has helped to preserve and petrify the tree trunks, which are now overgrown with algae.
