PHYSICAL THERAPY
A physical therapist will work with you on the day after your surgery. They will teach you self- care tips and range of motion exercises based on the rehabilitation protocol recommended by your surgeon. They will also review “Shoulder Precautions” your surgeon has ordered.

The day following your surgery, a physical therapist will:
• Review shoulder precautions with you
• Teach you techniques to correctly get into and out of bed
• Instruct how to put the immobilizer on and take it off
• Demonstrate how to correctly perform passive range of motion exercises VIDEO LINK (currently being edited – passive range of motion exercise)
• Teach you how to use the shoulder ice wrap
• Assess the need for adaptive equipment
• Evaluate your balance during walking
• Provide you and your family, or caregiver, with education.
Manage Swelling
Some swelling following joint replacement surgery is expected, but excessive swelling often leads to increased pain, poor range of motion, delayed healing, increased risk of infection, delay in returning to daily activities, and may even lead to increased scar tissue formation in the joint.
