 MARIA SKLODOWSKA-CURIE
Polish, (1867-1934)
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more so that we may fear less.”
Maria Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She and her husband, Pierre, discovered the elements polonium and radium.
She was the rst woman to win a Nobel Prize, the rst person and only woman to win twice, and the only person to win a Nobel Prize award in two different elds—physics and chemistry. She was also part of the Curie family legacy of ve Nobel Prizes, and was the rst woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. In 1995, she became the rst woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.
