FROM THE EMERALD CITY
TO THE WILD COAST
Flying conditions could not have been more ideal as we left Ace Aviation at Renton Field for a trip that took us over Seattle and out toward the Olympic Peninsula. Copalis Beach is midway along the Washington Coast just north of Gray’s Harbor.
Weather is always a potential issue in these parts, with coastal fog a near constant. And sure enough, we saw nothing but cloud cover as we approached. But after a few more minutes the morning clouds evaporated, and there was the coast. We easily spotted the two streams running into the ocean that define the landing area.
We approached from the sea to a perfect landing on sand that was as hard as concrete. It’s hard to describe the feeling of landing on a beach when you weren’t forced to in an emergency. We stepped out into a paradise of blue sky and miles of nothing but us and our Kodiak. The only thing missing was our razor clam shovel.
