in an interview

The reader is responsible for knowing the latest employment laws in regard to discrimination along with which questions can and cannot be asked during a pre- employment interview.)
The following is a guide to legal and illegal questions asked during the employment
interview as provided by the Equal Employment Opportunity Council (EEOC). They are meant to provide companies with the necessary knowledge to avoid possible employment-related litigation.
1) About the applicant’s name you MAY ask:
Have you ever used another name in your work?
You may NOT ask:
What is your maiden name? What is your spouse’s maiden
name?
2) About the applicant’s address you MAY ask:
What is your present address? You may NOT ask:
Do you own your own home?
3) About the applicant’s age you MAY ask:
Are you of legal age? (If the job involves work forbidden to minors [such as working on certain roofs], you must ask if the applicant is at least of minimum age.)
Do you have a work permit? You may NOT ask:
How old are you?
What year were you born?
When did you graduate from high school?
How old are your children? Do you plan to retire soon?
4) About the applicant’s Citizenship:
The EEOC states that “Most employers should not ask whether or not a job applicant is a United States citizen before making an offer of employment ... Federal law also prohibits employers from conducting the Form I-9 and E-Verify process before the employee has accepted an offer of employment. Applicants may be informed of these requirements in the pre-employment setting by adding the following statement on the employment application:
