Arthritis – Are you at risk?
Arthritis is in ammation of one or more of your joints. Main symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, known to worsen with age. Common types of arthritis are osteoar- thritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Depending on the type of arthritis, treatments will vary.
Childhood Arthritis is an umbrella term to describe a few types of arthritis. There are many different cases and clinically differing de nitions of childhood arthritis; howev- er, the most common type of childhood arthritis is juvenile arthritis, which affect those sixteen years and younger.
The main goals of arthritis treatments are to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
A. A common misconception of arthritis is that it is strictly a disease of old age. Arthritis affects people of many ages, even infants and children. Arthritis is not nec- essarily normal aging pain; it can indicate a larger, more severe problem in the joints. In some cases, arthritis can cause debilitating pain and discomfort.
A. There are varying treatment options available for those suffering from arthritis. It is important to understand that a few arthritis-related conditions can be cured, but most forms of arthritis are a chronic condition and can last long-term. Therefore, much of the treatment for arthritis is centered on pain management. Usually, an over-the-count- er medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen is recommended to treat the in ammation and pain. It is important to talk with your physician before undergoing any treatment op-

• Implementing an exercise program such as low-impact
aerobic activity, range of motion exercises for increased

Q. What is arthritis?
A. Arthritis is a swelling in the joints that causes pain and discomfort. It occurs when there is in ammation in one or more joints and can involve breakdown in cartilage. Car- tilage protects the joints, so when there is limited cartilage, joints can become sore and in amed causing swelling and pain.
A. The term “arthritis” is used generally to describe more than 100 types of rheumatic diseases and conditions affecting the joints. Rheumatic conditions are generally described pain and stiffness in the joints and can evolve gradually over time.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that occurswhenarthritisaffects veormorejoints.RAcantake several different courses: the condition can end within two to ve years of initial diagnosis with only one episode oc- curring; RA activity levels can uctuate over the course of the condition; or the condition can increase in pain and be constant.
Osteoarthritis is commonly known as a joint disease and is the most common form of arthritis. It is de ned by the symptoms of pain, swelling, and stiffness, and 12.4 million adults ages twenty- ve and older, and is estimated to af- fect 26.9 million adults ages sixty- ve and older.
