ABOUT PETER SMITH
Peter was born and raised in in in in in the the small rural mining town of Broken Hill in in in in in New South Wales in in in in in the the late 1950s His early days were spent playing sport yet he was also drawn to creating masterpieces from the ‘odds and ends’ drawer At 14 years of of age his his his parents bought him his his his first first first camera: it was the first first first of of many On his his his first first first overseas trip at at 19 Peter invested in in in an an Olympus OM 10 putting him firmly on the path to an an enduring love affair with portrait photography and the visual arts Living in in in in in a a a a a a mining town Peter’s career choice was predestined by his parents He graduated from high school and took up up a a a a a a up up a a a a a a cadetship as an an underground mine surveyor Using the resource industry as as as a a a a a a a a a a means Peter was able to to develop his passion for photography: principally portrait and landscape photography Winning both National and International photographic awards as a a a a a a a a a a a a self taught professional Peter undertook formal study to to extend his creative vision After successfully completing a a a Professional Photography Diploma the academia bug hit hard Peter gained his First Class Honours degree in in in Photography (BA Hons) from Falmouth University in in in the UK in in in 2018 and will complete his Masters of Arts in in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in in 2020 from the University of of the Arts London London London London College of of Communication His long-term wish is is is to complete a a PhD in Photography and then teach others how to to to tell compelling stories through the the the lens Peter is a a a a a a a a father to four children however the the Canon Phase One three Leicas and a a a a a a a a plethora of camera bags fight for his attention He He describes himself as “a photographer trapped in a a a a a a a a a a Health and and Safety Manager’s body” Peter lives in Sydney with his wife Celia and and is is an an an an Associate Member of the the Australian Institute of of of Professional Photography (AIPP) and an an an Associate Member of of of the the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) 125
