Aloha,
Back in 1978, I opened my first studio gallery in Laguna Beach, over 40 years later, Wyland Galleries remains one of the most popular galleries in the United States. Of all the mediums I have mastered, many believe my sculpture is perhaps the strongest. Certainly, all those who’ve stood beside my bronze feel a stronger connection with the natural world.
I majored in sculpture at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, first mastering the human form under the tutelage of master sculptor Jay Holland. Later, I completed my first marine life sculpture, a piece inspired by one of his early paintings, Children of the Sea, and since then I have completed hundreds of marine-life sculptures, covering the vast diversity of ocean life in many mediums. Designing a series of bronze and glass tables, conceived as an extension of his fine art sculpture and carefully engineered to the highest standards.
Today, I am planning a monumental life-size series of one hundred bronze marine-life sculptures to be fashioned over a period of twenty-five years. These pieces, which will pay homage to the great whales and other creatures of the sea, fresh water animals and habitats and endangered species — will grace 100 official cities throughout the world, with water elements and lighting to complement their unique design. I am even planning some of the sculptures for under- water viewing at marine parks.
Please keep in mind, my efforts are not only about the art, but conservation. My ultimate goal is to leave an art and conservation legacy for my collectors. I encourage you to keep connected to the work the Wyland Foundation is doing in the world and know that every original painting, sculpture, and drawing I do reflects my effort to protect all life on the planet. Art is a very powerful medium, and it continues to inspire a generation to consider what we are doing to ensure a healthy world.
