What a year we’ve had!
Both within and outside of the classroom, this year has been one of growth,
challenge, learning, and lots of laughter. As I am preparing to return to the United States, I have been reflecting on my year as an English language assistant at Rouges Barres. And while this year has certainly been anything but predictable, it has also been full of fond memories and one that I will never forget.
In the English classroom this year, we studied American culture and holidays, we became detectives for a day, we tested our English abilities with games and challenges, and we studied and produced English journalism to bring you the magazine that you have before you. I’ve been able to get to know the English students who I’ve taught and to see them progress in their abilities in English, and it’s been a joy to work with them. Outside of the classroom, my year as a language assistant has provided many unique opportunities that have contributed to an unforgettable experience. During my time in France, I’ve walked the bridges in Bruges, marveled at the Grand Market in Brussels, toured the vineyards in Burgundy, climbed the clock tower in Ghent, introduced my family to the boulevards of Paris, discovered hidden terraces in Rennes, walked the beaches of Dunkirk, relaxed in the Grand Place in Lille, and taken a camel ride through the desert in Morocco. Aside from the incredible travel I’ve been fortunate enough to do, I’ve made lasting friendships with fellow assistants and colleagues that have made the Nord feel like a second home.
While my year as a language assistant has not ended the way I had planned, I will be forever grateful for the experience that I’ve had this year and the students and colleagues who welcomed me so warmly. I’m very proud of the hard work and dedication of the students who I’ve worked with this year, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors—English and otherwise.
I hope that everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy summer!
