Industry Insider:
North American & Caribbean Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2015
6.2.2.4.1 SELF-PURCHASING: ON-LAND
Our research shows that almost three quarters, 73%, of those purchasing their main item on-land do so for themselves.
Fashion & Accessories and Alcohol are leading categories with a high level of self- purchasing, with around 9 in 10 buying for themselves. Tobacco self-purchasing is also very high although it must be noted that this is from a fairly low base.
Overall, the majority of self-purchases made on-land are to use/consume when the buyer returns home. However just over a quarter, 27%, of buyers purchasing for themselves said they were buying items to use whilst they were on their trip.
Younger travellers and males are significantly more likely than older shoppers and females to buy items to use whilst on the trip. Amongst those buying for themselves, Beauty, Confectionery is most likely to be bought to use or consume on the trip.
Tobacco and Alcohol are most likely to be bought to take home, due to restrictions on the consumption of off-trade products during the cruise itself.
This indicates that the on-land Duty / Tax Free stores should include items that can be used or consumed during the trip, particularly in Beauty which can offer solutions for forgotten items including skin care or cosmetics for use during formal occasions, such as on-board events.
Purchasing for self-consumption most common among younger travellers buying on-land
Self-purchasing most prominent in the Tobacco, Fashion & Accessories and Alcohol categories; lowest in Souvenirs
