6.1.2 ON-LAND VISITING DRIVERS
Industry Insider:
North American & Caribbean Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2015
Our research suggests that travellers are unlikely to visit a store at every port they visit, therefore port stores are not only in competition with Duty / Tax Free stores on-board the ship, but also with stores at other ports the shopper visits on their trip. Shoppers therefore need a strong motivation to enter on-land stores when there are so many other competing demands for their time.
Looking for gifts and souvenirs are strong motivations for visiting stores on-land, as shown by the top three leading drivers for visiting Duty / Tax Free stores on-land:
 To look for / buy a gift,
 To browse and maybe buy something, and
 To look for souvenirs / local products.
Other leading factors driving on-land store visiting include: to take advantage of good prices, to treat myself, to pass the time, to look for new products and to look for good promotional offers.
