For example, various cruise operators are targeting Asian travellers through offering traditional menu options, such as adapted menus to incorporate regional cuisine, local beers, sushi and traditional teas. Luxurious experiences have also been highlighted as a means of meeting the expectations of the Asian traveller, with cruise lines offering onboard experiences including Sake tasting and traditional bath spas.
In addition, emphasis has also been placed on providing high-end shopping opportunities, with several cruise lines having revamped or introduced stores to incorporate high-end brands and products.
This is illustrated by Starboard Cruise Services opening a 5,250 sq ft luxury retail space onboard the new Golden Era cruise ship, that made its maiden voyage in mid-May 2015. The new vessel, which operates as a joint venture under the Skysea name between Royal Caribbean and Chinese travel agency Ctrip, incorporates various luxury products and high-end brands including Swiss Watches by IWC and Bvlgari, leathergoods by Gucci, Furla and Emporio Armani, and Korean beauty brands including Missha and Holika Holika, specifically designed to target the Chinese traveller.
