LIGHTING THE WORLD The designers of the Gering Edlen Foyer wanted to bring a view of the world to students at the University of Oregon’s Lundquist College of Business by using the ceiling as backlit canvas. During the design process, the driving image evolved from a simple geographic map to a satellite image of the world’s population at night. Lighting analysis software allowed us to parametrically adjust the perforation design to achieve this performance (below image). The process also helped verify the selection of a linear, wall-mounted lighting fixture that could be installed in the limited plenum space. 120
