canned food and toys since November 27. On Friday evening, a Dinuba trolley will stop at each Dinuba elementary school to pick up the results. The trolley will arrive at the Dinuba Transit Center from 5 to 7 p.m. with the results packed inside the vehicle. Canned food and unwrapped toys can also be donated at that time.
The canned food and toys will be donated to those in need on Dec. 18 at Open Gate from 8 a.m. to noon.
On Dec. 20, Santa Claus will give out toys to children at A-Plus Automotive for the fifth consecutive year. The event will beheldfrom3to5p.m.and will feature a toy giveaway for children, free pizza, a bounce house and face painting. A-Plus Automotive is located at 1200 North Alta Avenue.
“It’s a really heartwarming event,” A-Plus Automotive owner Chuy Reyna said. “When
you see those kids grab a toy and they smile and are jumping around with it.
“I’m hoping they need it, because I grew up where we didn’t get much for Christmas. We were a big family ... I didn’t get many toys growing up. That’s the main thing, I wanted to provide toys for kids who don’t have much. God’s been good to me in business and I want to give back as much as I can.”
Toys have been donated by multiple service clubs, but donations are still being accepted to ensure each kid leaves with a toy. Unwrapped toys for children can be dropped off at A-Plus Automotive or at Grocery Outlet.
A separate Toys for Tots drop-off is also located at Ed Dena’s Auto Center at 1500 West El Monte Way. New and unwrapped toys and coats will be distributed to those in need.

Sentinel staff report
As many people look forward to celebrating the holiday season, the Dinuba Police Department reminds those in the community to take extra precaution to avoid becoming the victim of theft.
Dinuba Police Chief Devon Popovich said theft rates typically rise in Dinuba during the month of December. Popovich gave a reminder at the Nov. 28 council meeting to the council and public to be extra careful while out and about.
Popovich told the Sentinel, “This is the time of year that thefts really pick up. People take advantage of others when they are not home, or out and about shopping and leave their gifts visible in the windows. This is just a reminder for people to be aware of their surroundings and to lock up everything up. Pay attention to where you park, park in lighted areas, try not to be alone after dark and try to be with other people for the safety factor.”
A long list of tips was provided to stay safe during the holidays. Residents are advised to lock doors and windows whenever leaving the house, to have lights on an automatic timer and a radio or television on so the house appears occupied, and to have neighbors or family members pick up newspapers and mail when gone for extended periods of time. Residents are also advised to be cautious of strangers at your door, including those impersonating as package deliverers and those asking for donations.
When at the stores, shoppers are advised to shop during daylight hours and to be accompanied by a friend or family member, avoid wearing expensive jewelry, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, keep cash and valuables in your front pocket, keep a close watch on your wallet or purse, avoid carrying too many goods and to beware of strangers.
When on the road, drivers are advised to park in well-lit areas, park as close to your destination as possible, keep valuables in the trunk or out of sight, to always lock your doors and to be aware of your surroundings. When available, mall or store security can provide an escort from the store to your vehicle.
Parents are advised to teach their children necessary contact information, to stay close and to ask store clerks for help if they are separated – to never leave children alone in the car, to go to the car, or unattended to trips to the restroom.
When hosting or attending parties, partygoers are advised to have non-alcoholic beverages available and have alternative transportation or a designated driver prepared for those who drink alcohol. Those who drink alcohol are advised to eat before drinking, preferably high-protein foods.
In the event of an emergency, call 911. The Dinuba Police Department takes non- emergency calls at 591-5911. For more tips, visit Dinuba.org.
