Tips from Sanger PD to keep your children safe on their way to and from school
Sanger PD
It’s that time of the year again, even if your kids have already spent a few weeks in school, it is not too late to remind them how to get to and from school safely. It
is important to share a few simple tips with kids to help them stay safe when travel- ing to and from school.
Israel Cano Jr.
1. If riding the school bus, buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. Teach your child to always play it SAFE.
- Stay five steps away from the curb.
- Always wait for the bus driver to tell you when to board
- Face forward after find- ing a seat on the bus
- Exit the bus when it stops, look left-right-left, and take five steps away from the bus toward the curb.
2. If walking to school, children under 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult or someone who will make sure they walk safely. Teach your children to al- ways use the sidewalk, focus
when walking near traffic, use crosswalks when they are available to cross the street and look left-right-left before crossing any street.
3. If riding a bike, be sure to do these simple things to keep your bike ride safe:
- Always wear properly fitted helmet
- Ride in the same direc-
tion as traffic
- Stay in the bike lane
whenever possible
- Use the sidewalk appro-
priately
- Never use electronics
while riding, they are dis- tracting.
4. For some teens, back to school also means the new- found freedom of driving.
Teens are the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of a collision. Teach your teen that the car shouldn’t move until every- one is buckled up, use appro- priate car seats for younger passengers and remind them that the phone stays down when they are driving.
