Immanuel baseball, OC softball reach semifinals
Reedley's title campaigns end in first round losses, Dinuba and Sanger seasons also over
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
Just two Mid Valley Times coverage area teams remained stand- ing entering the second week of the upset-filled Central Section baseball and softball playoffs.
The No. 4 seed Im- manuel High baseball team (Division V) and the top-seeded Orange Cove High softball squad (Division IV) reached this week's semifinal rounds; with 10 of 48 semifinals schools have been NO. 10 seeds of higher.
Immanuel (15-15) hosted one of those dou- ble-digit seeds, No. 10 Firebaugh, in an evening contest on May 24. A win would advance the Ea- gles to the section cham- pionship game on Friday or Saturday, May 27 or 28 against the winner of top seed Kennedy-Del- ano or No. 4 Fowler at a site to be determined (probably Rawhide Sta- dium in Visalia).
Last week, Imman-
uel posted home wins over Tehachapi (4-2 on May 17) and Exeter (6-4 on May 19) to reach the semifinals. In the latter win, the Eagles posted their third victory of the season against their CSL rivals from Exeter by pulling away from an early 1-1 tie. Against Te- hachapi, Immanuel ral- lied from behind with three late runs.
West Sequoia League softball champ Orange Cove (24-6) successfully defended its top seed in its opening round and semifinal games; defeat- ing No. 16 seed Sunny- side 11-1 on May 18 and then hanging on late to defeat No. 8 seed Foot- hill from Bakersfield 6-3 on May 20.
The Lady Titans host- ed No. 4 Morro Bay on May 25, with a win ad- vancing them to a sec- tion finals game May 27 or 28 at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno.
Orange Cove collect- ed 12 hits to trounced Sunnyside in its playoff opener, then rode the

strength of Mia Castil- lo's pitching and a big four-run sixth inning to pull away from Foothill in its quarterfinal win.
Mary Joe Camaquin laced a two-run double and Ocejo Ariana added a two-ruin inside-the park homer that sliced past the left fielder to provide the big blows in the sixth, and Cas- tillo closed out the win despite yielding a three- run triple to right.

times will be deter- mined after the semifinal games are completed.
BASEBALL Pirates fall in extras against Central
Reedley High's magi- cal baseball season came to a close in the section Division II playoffs on May 12, when the Cen- tral High Grizzlies ral- lied back from a three- run deficit to post a 5-3
triumph in eight innings at RHS varsity ballpark. The Pirates finished with as 23-6 record, capped off by the championship in its final season in the North Yosemite League.
Will Gagnon closed out a sensational season with his team-leading sixth home run and a complete game pitching performance featuring eight strikeouts. Ethan Clark also had a hit an RBI for Reedley, which was limited to four hits
on the afternoon against two Central pitchers.
Sanger High's season concluded with a 13-16 record following an 8-6 loss at No. 6 seed Han- ford High on May 17. The Apaches had an ear- ly 1-0 lead and was tied at 2-2 when the Bullpups scored one in the third inning and three in the fourth for a 6-2 advan- tage.

Seniors Emanuel Salas and Nia Lamas advanced to Friday's state preliminaries with second and third place
finishes, respectively, at the May 21 Central Section Masters Meet at Buchanan. Salas clocked 1 minute, 54.81 seconds to place behind Buchanan's Noah Ray in the boys race while La- mas posted a personal record time of 2:14.75 to just edge out teammate Leah Mendibles (2:16.63) for a berth at state.
