Staying in Your Home Can Mean Living at A Retirement Community
By Jim Dueck
Many seniors enjoy staying in their own homes and that
is one of the reasons that a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) o ers Independent Living (IL) op- tions such as single level con- dominiums or as we call them at Palm Village Retirement Community, Patio Homes. A Retirement Community often o ers health care, but it is not a Nursing Home.
e IL options o er the very same amenities that one nds in a home outside of
a Retirement Community although not all homes o er all of the amenities. Some have replaces, some have garages, some have jetted tubs, some have hard wood oors, some have granite counters, some are as large as 1600 sq ft. All have beautiful full kitchens and bathrooms, a living room,
a bedroom and laundry room and usually lovely landscaped grounds.
ere is often on-site tness equipment, recreation rooms with planned activities, a library, and meeting rooms for family gatherings.
A main reason for moving to a Retirement Community is to decrease the workload for home maintenance, inside and outside and allow the residents to have free time to be active on their own schedule and locations. e maintenance
is taken care of by the Com-
munity.
And another reason is that
as we age, we are very likely to spend more time at the doctor’s o ce. When your home is at a Community, you have access to health care and that decreases the chance that a spouse or other caregiver will themselves experience health problems, fatigue, depression and worry taking care of you.
Emotional, physical and social support is plentiful at a Retirement Community and in some cases it is much less expensive than in-home
care which can be as much as $16,000. per month.
A CCRC o ers more than one level of care. Independent Living residents may need
to move to Assisted Living, Memory Care or to Skilled Nursing and yet, they will still have access to all of the Com- munity’s amenities.
So consider staying in your home at a lovely Retirement Community where residents feel safe, and stay active as in- dividuals or couples and often to the relief of their loved ones.
