Food Choices What Would You Choose?
e days of comfort food such as meat and potatoes plus a vegetable like corn are slowly becoming outdated. Our society is becoming more and more aware of how certain foods enhance health. Here at Sierra View Homes Retirement Community we are receiving more and more demands for dishes that are rich with antioxidants or food made with anti-in ammatory spices, like turmeric, and dairy foods with probiotics. A meal containing meat is not so much a “must have” as it once was. Retirement Community chefs across the US are look- ing for ways to present food choices that meet the diet desires of this new generation of residents.

spike in blood sugar.
So what about pro-
tein? Society has seen a big push for protein rich foods
in the past decade. Protein drinks, protein powder and especially red meat have been very popular to boost muscle strength. Protein intake is important but there is a trend to move away from red meat and toward a plant protein focus. Vegan and vegetarian people have had to learn how to combine the amino acids in vegetables and grains to make a complete protein to get the protein the body needs. Now the rest of us are learning how to do this as we take step to move away from the high fat meats. As the baby-boomers start to move into retirement communities, we are seeing a desire for great tasting alter- natives to meat protein.
As chronic illnesses increasingly a ects more Americans’-Health, the link between dietary habits and disease prevention is gaining traction. Studies show that eating more of the Plant- Based Diet has good health bene ts. Many people are moving toward a Plant-Based Diet that advocates eating foods such as fruits, veg- etables, tubers, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. is diet discourages red meats, dairy products, eggs and processed food. e idea is
to crowd out the discouraged foods. Sierra View Homes has moved in this direction o ering an ever-increasing of- fering of vegetarian dishes al- lowing our residents to choose what they eat.
Moving to a Plant-Based
Diet is a challenging thought. It is di cult to change decades of habits based on the food pyramid. Detailed sophisticated studies can lead us to know how to measure bene ts from the mineral, protein and vitamins in foods we eat. It is di cult to think that you can get everything you need to live a healthy life from a plant-based diet. No matter what your preference is in diet, Skilled Nursing facilities need to supply plant- based choices. Indeed, Sierra View Homes Retirement Community as well as other retirement communities, work to make Plant-Based food ap- petizing, tasty and a frequent choice on the menu.
tion regulation. Starting Janu- ary 1, 2019 “all Skilled Nurs- ing Facilities must be able
to create and serve a Plant Based Diet for those residents who have a doctor’s order.” A Plant Based Diet emphasizes eating whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains and recommends you stay away or limit eating any animal meat products or processed foods.
Many people are afraid a Plant-Based Diet would increase the amount of “bad” carbohydrates in the diet.
Now What?
Carbohydrates have been put on the bad list of foods to eat. e diets such as South Beach, Atkins and more have created a drastic no carbo- hydrates plan. Now, we have a much better understand- ing of what are healthy carbs and which carbs should be avoided. Avocados, bananas, eggs, peanut butter and, yes even potatoes in very small quantities, are a great source of good carbohydrates. ese good carbohydrates digest slower and do not give you a
