Staff Report
Reedley police arrested four male juve- niles from Selma on April 18 after finding a stolen sports utility vehicle parked at a gas station in north Reedley.
At about 11 p.m., police investigating a report of a stolen vehicle out of Selma spot- ted the 2011 GMC Terrain parked at the One Stop Beacon station and convenience store in the 900 block of East Manning Avenue. There were five teenaged boys, all from Selma, in the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene while police contacted the youths, ac- cording to Det. Sgt. John Cates. Officers de-
tained the other four teens after the driver ran from the scene.
The four teens face a variety of charges, Cates said. It’s possible that the driver who fled may have been responsible for the theft of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado truck that night. The vehicle went missing from the 900 block of East Ponderosa Avenue, about two blocks from the gas station. It later was recovered undamaged in the Dinuba area.
Also in the overnight hours of April 18 and 19, a thief or thieves stole a large pickup truck and burglarized a sports utility vehicle in the 1900 block of East Jefferson Avenue.

In photo at left, Bishop Timothy Manning ordained John Esquivel on April 27, 1968. In photo at right, Esquivel and Manning smiled after the ceremony, which marked the first ordination of a priest in the new Diocese of Fresno. Monsignor Esquivel, who has led St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church since 2007, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination with events Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27.

Mary’s Catholic Church, their parish in Visalia.
Esquivel’s father, Teodoro, was orphaned as a child and walked from Mexico to the United States. He found work on a New Mexico sheep ranch, eventually marrying the rancher’s daughter, Florinda. The couple came to Visalia for work.
His parents were devout and loving, Esquivel said: “They were very thankful to God that one of their sons became a priest.” He was the next to the youngest of eight children, and one of his sisters also chose the religious life, becoming a nun.
Early in his priesthood, Es- quivel received a condolence of sorts from an older priest. “I feel sorry for you,” the older man said. “You’ll never know the church I knew. You are going to be criticized no
matter what you do.” Esquivel dealt with chang-
ing public attitudes toward the church by remembering his vocation. “Stay true to what God is calling you to,” he said. “You can’t be worrying about what other people are say- ing. It also means you have to spend more time in private prayer and reflection.”
One of his prayers has always been simple yet pro- found: “Lord, keep me faithful to what I have to do.”
Before he was 30, Esquivel was assigned to St. John’s Ca- thedral in Fresno, the mother church of the diocese. Atten- dance was declining, and he was charged with rebuilding the congregation.
In an early homily, Esquiv- el addressed head-on the is- sue of his youth: “I need your help. I need you to accept me as your leader even though I’m young enough to be your grandson.” He also asked parishioners to invite their
grandchildren to a carnival he was planning to involve young people in the parish. “I’m sure they’re going to say ‘yes’ if grandma asks,” Esquivel told the congregation.
He always tried to reach out to youth. “If you take care of the kids, the parents will pay attention,” Esquivel said.
Children have brought him great delight. “Having Mass with the kids is basically why I became a priest,” he said.
After a decade at St. John’s, Esquivel traveled to the Vatican in Rome — a gift from parishioners at the ca-

Chair, beer bottle used in alleged assault
Staff Report
Police arrested a 27-year- old Reedley man April 22 af- ter he allegedly struck a male family member with a folding chair and a beer bottle.
Robert Pimentel was booked into the Fresno County Jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and bailed out on April 23. John Cates, detective/ser- geant with the Reedley police, said the incident happened sometime before 11:30 p.m. in the 700 block of East Duff.
Pimentel and the family member were at the location when an argument started and escalated into a fight. According to Cates, the vic- tim told police he was struck with a folding chair on the knee and also hit on the head
with a beer bottle.
The victim told police he
was temporarily knocked un- conscious and later walked to
a residence in the 800 block of East Lingo Avenue where he called police. Pimentel was arrested a short time later.
