Dinuba High HOSA takes home honors

Dinuba High School students involved in HOSA - Future Health Professionals had the opportunity to compete at the state leadership conference this year at the Cal-HOSA State Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California.
They competed among more than 3,500 students from the state of California. Last year, Jaifreen Bhangu became the first State Officer from DHS. This year she is having two students follow in her footsteps. Xavier Montes will serve as the Region 3 Vice President and
Makayla Siria Gonzalez will serve as the State Parliamentarian.
The DHS HOSA received the honor of Most Enthusiastic Chapter at the conference. The chapter earned four recognition awards for community service and awareness efforts. Six seniors earned individual service award honors for completing 75 to more than 250 approved community service hours. Three students earned scholarships: Jaifreen Bhangu was awarded the HOSA Board scholarship, Melissa Valdez the HOSA Merit and Joanne Rubalcaba the Jacob Hefter Memorial.
Ten students finished in the top
five: Isabel Rivera finished in third place in Extemporaneous Health Poster, Jaifreen Bhangu second in Researched Persuasive Writing & Speaking, Virginia Hernandez & Mariam Almoraissi fifth in Career Health Display Boards, Melissa & Mireya scored 47 out of 50 for Chapter Reflections, Isabella Gonzalez and Makayla Siria Gonzalez third and Xavier Montes and Jessica Gallardo fourth in Biomedical Innovations: existing.
In all, 55 students competed at the state level. Students who qualified to the International Leadership Conference and Competition will travel to Dallas at the end of June.

memorial policy was approved by the council.
Parks and Community Services Director Stephanie Hurtado said the policy is “A set guideline that will govern donations and gifts to the city of Dinuba and ensure that what is proposed by way of donations and gifts, protects the integrity of City property.”
The policy largely revolved around requests to place benches, trees and plaques at city parks as memorials. The policy will help facilitate gifts and to regulate and manage spacing of memorials.

Ruben Soto Carrillo
Ruben Soto Carrillo, a resident of Madera, died April 21, 2018. He was 80.
He was a salesman.
A celebration of life is being held May 3 at 7 p.m. at Fortress of Truth in Visalia. A graveside services will be held May 4 at 11 a.m. at Smith Mountain Cemetery.
Surviving family members include his wife, four sons, four daughters, four brothers, one sister and 10 grandchildren.

Eli “Ike” Mandel
Eli “Ike” Mandel, a resident of Tempe, Arizona, died April 28, 2018. He was 98.
He worked at Mathis and Bolinger furniture in Dinuba.
Services will be held in Arizona.
Surviving family members include two sons and two grandchildren.
Dan M. Reagan
Dan M. Reagan, a resident of Sultana, died April 26, 2018. He was 68.
He was a truck driver and instructor.
A funeral service is being held May 3 at 10 a.m. at Wellspring Christian Center. Burial will take place May 4 at 9 a.m. at Smith Mountain Cemetery.
Surviving family members include his wife and multiple brothers.

Jaime Hernandez, a resident of Orosi, died April 21, 2018. He was 27.
He was a field laborer.

In addition, a plot of land owned by the school district further south of Mercantile Row could end up as even more single-family lots.
“They bought that with the intention of putting a middle school or elementary school there,” Brandt said. “When we talked to them, their view was, ‘Well, we’re not really sure what we’re going to do with that.’ We showed in this plan what would happen if the school district sold that to a developer. It shows the potential of an additional 150 lots if the school district didn’t need that space.”
In other council actions:
• The city’s adoption of the Tulare County Multi- Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan could help Dinuba receive funds for much-needed safety resources.
Dinuba Fire Chief Chad Thompson explained to the council, “The plan highlights hazards within the county and city - earthquakes, fires, flooding. It identifies critical infrastructure in every agency that could potentially be damaged or disabled by these hazards."
Many of the concerns listed for the city of Dinuba include infrastructure and code enforcement, along with two major projects the city is attempting to fund.
“For example, some of our hazards are obviously flooding,” Thompson said. “It keeps our city eligible for any possible mitigation grant funds. Potentially, I’d use

Orosi man arrested for lewd
