Three days after a dramatic comeback vic- tory in the semifinals, the Orange Cove High softball teams combined a dominating pitching and hitting effort to roll to the Central Section DIvision IV champion- ship on May 28.
The top-seeded Lady Titans (27-6) racked up nine hits on offense, took full advantage of six Mission Prep errors and rode the strength of a two-hit, eight strike- out performance from sophomore Mia Castillo to blank the No. 2 seed Royals, 10-0, at Fresno State's Margie Wright diamond. The team's first section title also earned them the No. 2 seed in the CIF Southern Regional playoffs.
Orange Cove contin- ued the magic on May 31, routing No. 7 seed Legacy High Tigers from South Gate, 10-0, at OCHS. That moved the Lady Titans into the 4 p.m. regional semifi- nals Thursday, June 2. A win there would advance OC to the regional finals, possibly in Porterville against top seeded Mona- che, on Saturday, June 4.

Castillo admitted to being a bit scared and very nervous before the finale, but said "I just did my job. This is our game, and we've worked all year round to get here." The right-hander didn't walk a batter on the game, registering two of her strikeouts in the first to strand a bas- erunner at second.
After that, it was all Lady Titans.

Lamas clocked a time of 2 minutes, 16.99 seconds, about three seconds from a Top 12

The Apaches had one other qualifier for the state meet, senior Eman- uel Salas in the boys 800, but Salas did not start in the qualifying race on May 27.

Immanuel High looked just down the road to find its new var- sity boys basketball coach.
Todd Brown, who coached at Kingsburg High the past 10 years including seven as head coach, was announced as the new coach and director of the program by the school in mid-May. He also is joining the school staff as an on- campus teacher.
"We are excited to have Todd join our school community. He loves the Lord and understands the ministry of Immanuel," Immanuel Schools Superintendent Ryan Wood said in a news statement on May . "We look forward to watching him
build on the prior success of our basketball program."
Brown — who posted a 101-86 record with the Vikings, highlight- ed by a 27-win season and the Di- vision IV section championship in 2019-20 — succeeds Chris Woods as Eagles coach. Woods went 79-46 in five seasons (including an COV- ID-abbreviated 2020-21 campaign) which featured a run to the Divi- sion IV state finals in 2018-19.
Brown played at Modesto Christian High, winning a state championship along with two Nor- Cal titles and four section champi- onships. He was a two-time team captain and NAIA All-American at Fresno Pacific University, and fin- ished as the school's second lead- ing career scorer.
Following his FPU career, Brown toured with Athletes in Ac- tion on the East Coast & France, and played professionally in Aus- tralia for one season with the Ger- aldton Buccaneers before begin- ning his teaching and coaching career at Kingsburg High.
“My family and I are very ex- cited to be at Immanuel,” he said. “To combine an elite athletic at- mosphere with gospel-centered truth day in and day out is unique and special. And it is something wewanttobeapartofandhelp build.”
Brown and his wife, Tarin (an IHS graduated) live in Kingsburg with their 4 children: Ford (9), Poppy (7), Boone (3), and Honor (6 months).
