What Are My Transportation Options If I Stop Driving?

For those seniors who are ready to look for alterna-
tives to driving their own car, there are some options avail- able in Reedley. When the wise decision to stop driving has been made because of di- minishing eyesight, or other physical limitations, plus the cost of maintaining a car, it doesn’t necessarily mean a loss of independence. It just means that you will enjoy traveling in a di erent mode of transportation.

75% discount on taxi fare. ere is Dial a Ride o ered those over 65. Palm Village also has a shuttle to take our residents to local retailers, grocery stores, banks and pharmacies. Uber is avail- able. Plus there may be some folks who just enjoy the opportunity to volunteer to drive someone to appoint- ments, if you just ask them.
Transportation is one of the most important issues for seniors and their families.
Seniors may actually spend less on their transportation needs when they no longer drive their own cars. e cost for individual insurance, registration, depreciation, fuel, repairs and maintenance may actually be more than it costs to use other options.
When seniors and their families consider whether or not it is time to stop driving, safety is the most important consideration not only for themselves but for everyone
else who shared the roadway. e cost of owning your own transportation could also be a signi cant factor. Accord- ing to a new AAA study, “owning and operating a new vehicle in 2017 will cost a driver an average of $8,469 annually, or $706 each month. And some vehicles are even more.
My wife and I have trav- eled to Boston, Washington D.C. and New York City. On all three trips, we were
happy to discover how easy and enjoyable it was to use public transportation or walk. We even rented bicycles and rode all over Manhattan in New York City. It was a great way to get around these big cities.
Having our own car or truck is great but there are other options worth con- sidering that may be more bene cial for all involved.
