Soccer teams play fundraiser to purchase championship rings

Two communities came together on May 11 to celebrate their high schools’ Central Section boys soccer championship titles while raising money for championship rings for their play- ers and coaches.
The fundraiser game at Reedley High School’s Sal Gonzalez Field matched up Reed- ley and Orange Cove high schools, both of whom won section titles in March. Reedley captured the Division II title while Orange Cove won the Division VI crown.
The two teams put on an exciting show while fans from both schools cheered from the stands. Visiting Orange Cove won the game by 2-1, turning the tables on a 2-0 loss to Reedley in regular season play last January.
At halftime, staff members from both schools competed in a penalty kicks shootout won by RHS, 4-2.
Miriam Cardenas Aleman — the mother of Reedley High player Isaac Cardenas — called the game a huge success.
“The support from the community, the school, and everyone from the district has been phenomenal,” she said. “We feel loved by the community. The boys thought that ‘We want to
celebrate our win,’ so this event was one for the books for them.”
Michael Barraza, senior midfielder for Or- ange Cove, said both teams were able to cele- brate their accomplishments of the past season.
Horacio Bravo, who coached the Orange Cove team, said the match featured a great envi- ronment and matchup of two talented programs.
“Both teams competed, showed the com- munity what they’re all about,” he said.
Meanwhile, the final score didn’t dampen the day for RHS sophomore Phillip Rico.
“We had a good turnout, and we ended off with a good season,” he said. “This event has never been done in the district and having it was something special for us as we won titles in the same way.”
Reedley High coach Eric Velarde said the schools hope to make the exhibition matchup an annual one.
“Watching it all come together was amaz- ing in how we were able to collaborate to make this event possible,” he said. “Watching the boys put on a show was spectacular, especially in the second half. I was glad to see the players enjoy- ing themselves.”
Jan Balallo is a sophomore at Reedley High School and member of the school’s AVID (Ad- vancement Via Individual Determination) Club.
Woman killed in rural crash north of town
Staff Report
A Fresno woman died May 30 when she was eject- ed from a truck that over- turned on a rural road north of Reedley. A Dinuba man riding in the vehicle suffered moderate injuries.
Deandra McVey, 29, died at the scene of the 3 a.m. crash while Jackie Ray Cross, 29, was transported by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, according to a Cali- fornia Highway Patrol news release.
The news release said that it was unclear if McVey or Cross was driving the 1990 GMC truck. The truck was traveling north on Alta Av- enue and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway at Edgar Avenue.
Neither McVey or Cross were wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the truck, the CHP reported. Officials
said it’s unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in thecrash.
The CHP report on May 30 said that the crash still is underinvestigation.
