Memory Care Residents
May Need More Than Assisted Living
By Jim Dueck
During the past few years, many new Assisted Living Memory Care Communities (ALMCC) have been built in the Fresno and the surround- ing area, yet no higher level Skilled Nursing Centers have been built during the same pe- riod.
Residents of ALMCCs of- ten need care beyond assisted living, because Memory Loss
can be progressive. To meet this need, it is important that seniors with memory loss move to a community that can not only provide care for their cur- rent needs, but also have care available within the same com- munity when Skilled Nursing care is needed in a secure set- ting.
As an example of the two op- tions, Palm Village Retirement Community o ers ALMCC, for those with the early stages of Dementia. We also o er

Skilled Nursing Memory Care in our Health Care Wiebe Center. Our second level is a unique option here in the val- ley as most Communities only o er ALMCC.
Caring for seniors with De- mentia requires not only spe- cial training, but also a sta and environment designed to enhance the quality of life. Ex- perts in the eld of Dementia Care develop loving programs designed to reduce stress, encourage growth, improve
health, build self-esteem and maintain individual dignity.
e physical environment provides a simpli ed oor plan with visual cues to help residents orient themselves. Soothing colors and soft light- ing minimize distractions and agitation, and enclosed court- yards allow residents to en- joy the outdoors in a safe and secure area. A dining room with prepared meals and daily snacks meets the requirements for nutrition and individual di-
ets.
With careful planning, se-
niors with cognitive and mem- ory de cits can move to a com- munity that is loving and well prepared to enhance their daily lives, no matter the level of progression they need now and in the future. When research- ing Memory Care, be sure to ask if care at the Skilled Nurs- ing level is available when the need arises.
